I just landed a great account for $7000 set up and $2000 a month to help them set up their online business presence and get the leads and sales they need to make their product profitable. It is an awesome feeling let me tell you.
This was a great case of serendipity happening. I was in the park at a Kayak Final and met a friend that is a mover and shaker in the Tec arena here in my area. While we were catching up this other guy passes us and Russ, my friend says...Ohh Steve you really need to speak to Rebecca. She can really help you get your business off the ground. She has the skill sets you have been looking for for this project. So Steve and I exchanged business cards (HAVE CARDS WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES-nothing fancy, print them off on your printer using Avery Biz cards stock)
I then took the initiative to follow up when I got home and emailed him, letting him know I was free to sit and review his business needs with him. He wrote back and set the appointment up. We then met a second time in phone conference with another principle and I outlined at that time what I felt was a path to be taken. I also mentioned my rates at that time...I felt I would start HIGH so if needed we could negotiate down...but they took the prices I said as is...WHEW.
I then sent them a one page proposal outlining what I would do for the start up money amount...and then what the monthly continuity would cover. Gave a small paragraph about the expected financial outcomes for them...increases in customers, and thus revenue over the next 6 months, after the initial 3 month ramp up that I always say is needed to get something ranking and moving forward.

This helps cut through all the complex legalize and get to the meat of what you will deliver and the monthly outcomes expected.
I have the check in the bank. I was going to ask for 50% up front and then 50% at the end but then I said to myself, nope, I am going to just write the numbers out and see what happens. They had no problem paying me the total amount upfront.
So lesson is don't underestimate your value...it will come out the way it should.....

How do you come with the numbers? And how do you know that the numbers will be at the level you specified?
I did not give them any true concrete numbers cause we need to restructure their pricing plan and they let the product languish and so lost most of their customers due to attrition so any increase is a bonus in their eyes. They are programmers and not sales people so they were not closing any deals so I bring that to the table and I figure by just positioning the product right we can increase market share easily.
This is a technology that does not have alot of competition YET...so if we can get it to the marketplace before our selected prospects I am convinced that it will sell it self...it is that great a product...they just have no closing skills what so ever....

I like the fact that you took the action to get in touch with this guy and do something about it. Many people here know a lot and they are not even taking the action to go and check if this stuff really works.
I advise people to continue networking with their friends, relatives and etc One of those people will send a referral your way. Keep going guys, you will succeed. Your referral is on its way, keep sowing the seed. Your life will never be the same!
