    Smile Direct Mail Story

An interesting thing happened yesterday, went to my mailbox and among other things was a plain white envelope, hand written address ( to my business name, then attn: my name) with no return address. This instantly struck me as a direct mailing technique that I have heard in certain seminars. Even though I KNEW it was some sort of marketing piece, I still wanted to open it as many of my clients do send letters with hand written address'. So, I did just that, and boy was I surprised. Inside was a white and pink piece of paper, the pink piece had highlighting on it - it was for personal health insurance. I have seen this exact tactic on some of the videos over at WF about direct mail. Though I dont need the agents service, I DID open the mail and thats half the battle. I almost wanted to call the agent just to talk marketing with them. Its interesting to see how some people outside of the IM world are putting these techniques into action. Has anyone else seen tactics we take for granted in places you would not expect?

I think as marketers we tend to open and read things most people wouldn't... just to see how others are doing it

I mean I will even usually read those "we do SEO / can get your 1st page Google" spam emails just to see what people are offering, while others would probably just delete on sight!

But great story either way Travis, let us know if you get anymore stuff like that =)

So it would seem that these marketing tactics really do work to a certain extent, even on the people who are well aware of them for what they really are. That's what you call effective marketing.
