    Hello!
I'm new to this forum and very happy to have found it.
I currently sell mobile websites to local businesses here on
the Oregon coast. I've only done 2 so far. I stopped in a
local bar yesterday and talked to the owner (who I know casually)
and asked her how business was. She said it's been great and
that she was really happy about it.

I told her I'd noticed that she didn't have a website and I showed
her the mobile site I made for a nearby restaurant. She asked me a few
questions and then I said that she really needed a regular site, too.
Then she said "OK"! I'm going to set up a meeting with her later
this week to talk about what she has in mind and maybe show her
some samples of other sites and get paid before I get started.

I've built some Wordpress niche sites in the past, but I'm not sure
about building a site for her bar. I may decide to outsource it.
I could take some pictures, etc. It's the oldest continuously
operated bar on the Oregon coast!!! I may be able to do it
myself....we'll see. I have a meeting tomorrow with a gal that
runs an oceanfront luxury hotel. I was checking out her site
last night and noticed that they own 5 properties! She'll
probably want a mobile site for all of them, right????

    Have a great day everybody!

    Kathy

    Wow Kathy! Way to go!

Outsourcing is always good, lets you focus on BRINGING IN more money as opposed to being busy SERVICING the clients.

But either way works if you aren't too busy

Keep up the great work and keep us posted on your success!

    Hi Kathy,
    Congratulations! Money loves speed!
YOu've got me curious. I just started my website design business in August and officially started promoting myself 2 weeks ago. My first potential client has asked me about a mobile website and an iphone app, neither which I have done, but because I learn quickly I know I can have something ready by their deadline which is January. So I have plenty of time.

Just wondering do you use any special platform for designing mobile websites? Is it the same process as designing apps?

Do you have any experience in web programming? Programming a mobile website isn't much harder than doing a normal one, except there are certain W3C standards that you'd have to use (i.e. mobile fonts have to use the measurement of 'em', instead of 'pt' or 'px'). If you don't have programming knowledge to do a mobile website, than there are certain things out there that convert or create new 'mobile friendly' (Not 100%). For example, Wordpress has a mobile theme, or you can do a search for 'Mobile Site Creator' and there will be some, but they look out of date and once again not as good as custom coding.

If the above is to complicated, and you have no knowledge in coding, than the only option for an iPhone App is to outsource it. iPhone Apps use a combination of C++ and their own SDK, to much to learn before January. Depending on what you want to provide inside the iPhone App there MIGHT be something out there that creates a generic 'information' application, but nothing complicated I would imagine.

    Thanks chuffman,
Yes, I do know coding. Enough to customize websites, css and php. So I probably could handle the mobile web site. I will research it more. For his iphone app he wants mostly a photo gallery (like a portfolio) with text descriptions. Would be nice if there was a gallery iphone app that can be customized. But I need to be able to brand it with his logo/icon (no advertising and no requirement to link to app developer).

Hi everyone! Thanks for the great feedback. Dexx, to be perfectly honest, I would rather outsource the main website for the bar. I'm comfortable doing the mobile sites for now. I guess I should look around for some affordable outsourcing! Any suggestions?

Patchouli, I use either Wordpress or MobiSiteGalore (very easy). Actually I haven't done a Wordpress mobile site yet, but Matt Bush includes a good video of how to do it in his mobile site WSO and I want to give it a try. Wordpress mobile sites look more like real websites.

Marcos, yes I'm the Kathy you met on the WF. Things are going pretty good! Thanks for asking! How are you?

My appointment with the gal with 5 oceanfront properties is in an hour. I'll post my results later today. I hope she wants 5 sites!

    Thanks again!

    Kathy :-)

Angry Re: WOW! That was easy! Don't be afraid to ask! (I got stood up!)

Thanks for the support tacoma, but this is what happened!

    She stood me up!

I got there right on time and went into the lobby. I waited around for
a few minutes and then the front desk clerk tried to call her on her
cell phone but she couldn't get through. So I walked outside to use
my phone and was leaving her a message when the clerk came out and told me that she
had just gotten a text message that said that she was going to have to
reschedule! Well, I think she could tell I wasn't pleased when I finished
leaving her the message. I'm a business person, too, and I deserve a little
more respect than that. She could have let me know before I drove all the way
to the other end of town to meet her!

I guess I should've called her to confirm, but we just talked on Monday!
While I was out I stopped at another nice hotel where I know the manager,
but today was her last day. She gave me the card of the new manager
and said that I should email him because he's got a lot on his plate right
now, having just took over the hotel on the 1st, but she thought he
    would be interested.

Any advice on how to handle the woman who stood me up? Should I call
her to reschedule or wait for her to call me?

Thanks for your feedback on this.

    Kathy

    Hi Don!
Wow! The steambath, huh? That's awesome! I think I'll try that one! LOL
Thanks for the great message! I think I'll follow your lead on some of those ways
to get seen and heard. You've got guts, don't you? I may have to have a shot of
tequila first, but whatever it takes! Loved the cigar story, too!
Looking forward to more stories and advice....

Hey Kathy, it might be worth checking out mobistro for the bar. They're like mobisitesgalore, but geared specifically towards food establishments. I like the look of their stuff a lot better.

I go see the Owner of a restaurant...COLD....ask if he/she has a minute to SEE something that COULD bring them lots of Diners. They usually agree. I then set my "Portable DVD Player" (Phillips $80 at WalMart) on his desk (or the Bar or a Table or any Flat Place) and show him/her Sample Videos from restaurants I've done.
FWIW, if the rumors are true about the new iPads about to be released having a built-in camera, then all you'll need is the iPad to do this. Video the place with it, go back, do the editing (using included software), then go back and play it for him. The video never leaves the device! When you're done, hit a button and upload it to his website.

    Just saying...

Doesn't the iPad have a built in video editor in the form of iMovie? That makes it even easier to do on the spot! (I know iPhones do)

That's what I meant by "(using included software)". I'm not sure it's iMovie specifically, but there IS a video editor included in the latest iOS 4 release, mainly for use with iPhones and iPod Touch's that DO have built-in cameras. The iPad is next to get a camera. The only thing is ... nobody is sure whether there will be one or two. Hopefully it'll have two. (There certainly isn't a lack of space!)
